Steps 2 Summit
The whole school program to improve the
physical, social and mental health of children.
The Challenges
Every day, people take on incredible challenges to test their resilience, physical fitness and mental strength. Now you can take your children on the adventure of a lifetime to summit some of the world’s most famous mountains.
Steps 2 Summit allows each year group to virtually climb a different mountain from around the world. During this time, they record their daily physical activity which transfers into progress towards the summit.
Each challenge has been developed to encourage your children to become more physically active, to increase their aspirations and develop important character skills.
Primary Schools
The 7 Summit Challenge is designed for primary schools looking to embrace a whole school cross-curricular project.
It is based on a real life challenge, where mounaineers climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents around the world.
Our 7 Summit Challenge is no different – we are challenging children to join us on the adventure of a lifetime, increasing their fitness whilst nurturing their inner explorer!
Infant Schools
The Big Adventure takes infant explorers to some of the wildest parts of the earth and helps instil an early love and appreciation of exploration and adventure!
In Reception, we start by summiting Carstenz Pyramid in Oceania before heading to Antartica in year 1 to summit Vinson Massif.
From Antartica, it’s off to the land of the rising sun in Year 2 to tackle Mount Fuji in Japan!
This really is a big adventure for all infant schools!
Junior Schools
Specifically designed for junior schools, the famous four challenges participants to virtually summit some of the most iconic mountains in the world.
From the highest free standing mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro, we head to Mont Blanc in the Alps. From there, it’s to the world’s second highest mountain, K2, before finally attempting the big one – Mount Everest.
This challenge will certainly get participants thinking BIG!
"Every child, every day at lunch time walks for 15 minutes and then on any non-PE days we make sure that they are using it in the afternoon or morning for 15 minutes. At first they were struggling to run 1 full lap on our field but now they are running 3 or 4 laps without stopping. I am confident now that as a school we are active for 30 minutes every day."
Chloe Mills, PE Lead
Increasing and Recording Activity
The Steps 2 Summit program features four main methods for increasing and recording the physical activity that your children complete. Every child's activity is recorded and uploaded to their individual account to show their progress towards the summit of the specific mountain they are climbing.
Scanner
Each child in school has a unique barcode which, when scanned, will upload their individual activity data to the Steps 2 Summit system. Scanning software is predominantly used when recording walking to school, or physical activity at lunch and break time.
Once a distance is set into the Steps 2 Summit program (either for a specific course or for distance from home to school) each scan of a child’s barcode will add that distance to their progress.
Scanners are a fantastic way to get young leaders involved in facilitating the Steps 2 Summit program in your school.
Tablet/Phone
Teachers can simply track pupil progress with the easy to use tablet or phone entry screen.
Each time a child completes a lap of the school course, the teacher touches the correct name on the screen. The more laps the child completes, the more progress is added to their journey.
Using this method of data entry allows teachers to challenge children to complete more laps of their course and not be constrained by having to complete the same amount of activity as their peers.
Training Videos
With Steps 2 Summit every child can be active every day, regardless of the weather or the size of your school grounds.
Mountain Hut Training Videos can be completed anywhere with a large screen, such as a classroom or the school hall. Each child follows the on-screen instructions from the 7 minute HIIT video which, once completed, rewards them with 1km progress towards the summit of their mountain.
Each Mountain Hut Video is unique, meaning there are hundreds of different videos to keep your children motivated to continue their journey towards the summit!
Whole Class Activity
There are numerous benefits of taking your class out of the classroom each day and walking with them for their daily activity.
Not only do the children benefit from the brain break, physical activity and fresh air, teachers also benefit from the time away from the classroom and the unique bonding experiences that can be had whilst completing the daily activity.
At the end of the whole class activity, children and teachers return to the classroom re-energised, focussed and ready to learn.
"Now that we have the scanners, inputting the data is much easier and quicker. Not only that, I have passed the knowledge onto the children and they can now do it by themselves. This gives the children ownership of their physical activity and they have really enjoyed it so it is a win, win for everybody."
Dan Hill, PE Lead
Getting Inspired
What can we learn from adventurers
What makes ordinary people attempt extraordinary challenges? From physical fitness to mental strength and resilience, adventurers push themselves to the limits of human ability to achieve their goals.
As teachers, we can take some of these transferable skills and instil them into the day to day lives of our children.
The Steps 2 Summit program uses real life adventurers and their stories to inspire and motivate children to develop their own summiteer skills and expand their horizons.
The skills used by adventurers to tackle the challenges faced on an expedition can be transferred into the way we live our lives on a day to day basis. The assemblies and displays in the Steps 2 Summit system specifically focus on adventurers and the unique skills that they develop to maximise their chances of success.

Increasing Aspirations
Did you hear about the 13 year old that has summited the 7 highest mountains in the 7 continents of the world? Or maybe you heard about the first double amputee to summit Everest? What do they have in common? The ability to dream big!
A key component of the Steps 2 Summit program is the focus on increasing aspirations and understanding that anything is possible if you want it enough and are prepared to work hard to achieve it.
'What’s your Everest?' challenges children to focus on setting personal goals and working towards achieving them. The program looks at goal setting, overcoming barriers, maximising the chances of success and perseverance.
No matter how big, or how small. Everyone has their own personal Everest that they want to conquer.
What's Your Everest?
"The summiteer skills really do compliment the ethos of our school... we have learning to learn skills and are devising the new curriculum so we are putting them at the heart of it but we are actually thinking about changing, so that the summiteer skills sit at the heart of our curriculum instead."
Rachel Boswell, Headteacher
Developing Summiteer Skills
Seamlessly developing key character skills
Summiteer Skills are a fundamental part of the Steps 2 Summit program and a key component in the development of better mental health in children.
By focussing on key skills such as honesty, perseverance, kindness, pride and curiosity, the Summiteer Skills lessons focus on each of the 8 skills developed in the program and help children compile their own toolbox for dealing with situations that arise in life.
Lessons are specifically provided for each year group to ensure maximum impact.
Additionally, Summiteer Class Packs are available to purchase. These packs include reward charts and stickers which can be awarded when children continually demonstrate the different summiteer skills. The class packs are a fantastic visual reminder to children to continue to demonstrate the summiteer skills in their day to day school life.
